Google Workspace Users Can Now Grant Access to Files Through Requests
Google is streamlining the process of file sharing and access request management by incorporating an approval system directly into the files. This eliminates the need for multiple steps involved in responding to such requests via email.
Google said in the Workspace update, “Currently, when users request access to a file, approvers receive an email with the option to share the file or decline the request,” but with the new update, “users can review and respond to requests in the file.”
How does it work?
Now, with the new update, approvers will see a notification dot on the Share button if they have a pending access request, and a banner at the top of the sharing window.
Google states that it is not abandoning the current way of accepting requests. ergo, approvers can still grant access requests through the current email system, and if the Notify checkbox is selected, when the approver responds to the request, the person requesting the access will be notified via email.
When will it be implemented?
Google has already started the rollout on June 20 and says it could take up to 15 days for the feature to be visible to users. The feature is available to all Google Workspace users, including personal accounts.
Google Docs and other apps have become an integral part of people’s workflows—they integrate seamlessly with Google Workspace and find a place in many industries. Now, due to widespread adoption, collaboration and sharing of documents has also become commonplace. So it makes sense for Google to revamp a frequently used system.
